THROW OUT THAT RESOLUTION
I have a student who wrote a book about lists. It's called TO DO lists*. I find lists fascinating, especially the ones we create at the start of a new year.
Often people sit down with a paper and pen (or computer) and make a list of their New Year's resolutions. Out with the old, in with the new.
In the past I remember December 31st marked a day of reflection. Each New Years I would make a list of resolutions but there is really only one item I truly remember.
LOSE 10 POUNDS
EVERY YEAR it said the same thing (or some variation on the theme).
"Lose 10 lbs. TEN POUNDS"
"Be Negative 10 pounds"
"I want to be 10 pounds lighter"
Sometimes I knew I didn't need to lose 10 pounds so the phrase went like this "Don't gain the 10 pounds I lost this year"
No matter how I wrote it the final verdict was this… I wanted to change my body.
As I read the words "lose 10 pounds" I'm thinking that sounds like a demand, "Was that the best way to treat myself?" Do I feel inspired when I read that phrase? Not really. What I feel is the "lack of..." and the "NO's" and the depravation.
This year I have a new idea for you. (And don't worry, even though it's January 9th you can still revamp your list or if you don't have a list even better just try this exercise).
Take a look at your list. Do any of the items have a demanding quality or create tension in your body when you read it? If so change that item to an intention instead.
I like this definition of intention:
Purpose or attitude toward the effect of one's actions or conduct
Make your list about your purpose. Thinking about purpose leads us to actions.
Back in 1997, when I was still known to buy and eat a box of cereal in one sitting, I did a transformational workshop called Landmark Education*. During the program we were asked to create ourselves as a possibility in the world. I created myself to be the possibility of health and love.
That year was a turning point for me. If I was the possibility of health in each moment what would I do? Notice how it says the possibility of health, not I am health. Each moment was an opportunity to create myself over and over and over again.
As I embraced this way of thinking I came up with questions like: Where would I hang out if I was the possibility of health? What would my activities be during my down time and WHAT WOULD I EAT if I was the possibility of health?
I never said I would or wouldn't eat something. I never told myself something was bad. I never said don't do something. Instead I framed it differently and- ya know what I felt inspired, not deprived. I especially didn't put a number on how much I should weigh. Instead I committed to my possibility and then each choice became easier and easier.
That was a HUGE moment for me and my relationship to my body. EVERYTHING shifted. I had the freedom to stop dieting and start living in alignment with my true purpose.
So, what's on your list this year?
Can you sit down with it and reframe it into a purpose statement. What would be an inspiring possibility for you? Can you find the questions you most want to ask when you think of this possibility?
Take a moment, write some ideas down. If you don't feel like writing then think about it before you go to bed and let your dreams and sub conscious show you the way. Treat it like a meditation and inquire into the following: What are you dedicated to, inspired about and interested in? What do you intend to create in your life?
I'm excited to hear what you come up with. Write me and let me know.
If you find yourself hitting some roadblocks and need support then reach out. (I don't think these kinds of changes are meant to be done alone).
Take the invitation to join me for a free health consultation or come to one of the upcoming workshops.
Nutrition 101 and Introduction to Nutrition will be held in San Francisco and for those of you that live out of the bay area we have a new surprise for you. Join us for our first Tele-class: Creating Your Health.
These workshops will be interactive “lab groups” where each participant will receive the tools to find their own path to health and wellness.
We will focus on purpose and intention through the means of compassion, nutritional information, meditation, inquiry and direct interaction with the teacher. I hope to see you there.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
