Feed your body. Change your life.

  personal note from darshana

Last week I was working with one of my clients.

I had given her a bowl of plain brown rice and steamed greens to eat.
She asked "Is there anything ON the greens?"
I said, "No."She picked at them.
Then I asked, "Are you going to eat the rice?"
She said. "No."
I said, "Why not?"
She wouldn't answer.
I asked, "Do you think the rice will make you fat?"
She said, "YES"

What do you think of this scenario?
Is this a conversation that you have in your own mind or a different version?

This week I want to invite you to take a look at your beliefs about food and how they shape your actions.

Do you get bogged down by your thoughts about food?
What helps you figure out if a food statistic is fact or fiction?
What is your direct experience when you eat a certain food?
Does it change day to day, week to week or year to year?
Is what worked in your 20's the same thing that works for you in your 30's, 40's or 60's?
My guess is that it will and does change.

One of Fruition Women's Health nine steps to optimal health is

…learning to demystify beliefs about food

I think the first thing to look at is what ARE YOUR beliefs about food?

Check out some of the stats below and notice what comes up for you as you read them. Also included are a series of questions to support you to get clearer about the conscious and unconscious thoughts that might be "weighing you down". These questions come from my experience with Byron Katie's process "The Work." Check out her website, resources and workshops at http://www.thework.com/index.asp.

In health,

  food for thought

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

39 million Americans are obese and the number keeps doubling every 7 years! Yet there are millions of dollars being spent on consuming low-fat and sugar-free foods each year! When I read that statement I start to wonder …are low-fat and sugar-free foods helping or hurting our intentions to becoming healthier or losing weight.

I remember when I was 24 and lived for my fat-free Snack Well cookies. One thing I know about that time in my life is that I was afraid of fat, even the word scared me. I was always on a diet and exercised like crazy. I ate lots of fat-free cookies as my "treat" because they fit into my calorie plan. I wasn't, however, losing any weight…

I had to question this situation…

Marilyn Monroe , one of America's greatest Hollywood icons was a size 12 at the height of her fame. This is the average dress size for American women today and yet the average fashion model is a size 2, weighing 25% less than the average woman…. 25%!!!!

Why is it that when I read magazines there's a little voice in my head that says I should look like that…should I? Should you?

Fat supports brain function, hormonal balance, nourishes our skin, nerves and mucous membranes. It helps us feel satisfied, eases fatigue, boosts the immune system, relieves constipation and is the carrier of fat soluble vitamins A-D-E and K.

OK. These are the facts. Yet there is a persisting myth that Fat makes you fat. This was my client's belief. Is this your belief? If not, what do you believe about fat? Try this exercise below

Notice the thoughts that arose as you read the statistics?
Did you notice any feelings or reactions?

Make a list of 5 beliefs you have about fat…
Make a list of 5 beliefs you have a carbohydrates…

Make a list of 5 beliefs you have about your body…

Make a list of 5 beliefs you have about your ability to lose or gain weight
(if this is a relevant health goal)

Do you act as if these beliefs were scientific facts?
How do you react when you encounter these thoughts?

How does it feel when you believe that thought. Be still. Notice what happens.
Does this thought bring peace or stress into your life?
Where in your body do you feel this thought?
Are there images associated with this thought? Watch, be still, notice.
When did that thought first occur to you?
How old were you?
What was happening at the time?
Whose thought was it originally?
How does it affect your relationships?
How do you treat yourself?

What feelings come up, as you move past the "belief"?

Who would you be without the thought?
Is there another story other than the one you know now?

"One of my favorite expressions is 'magic is a shift in consciousness.' This program provides just that magic. Darshana possesses an incredible gift of shining a loving spotlight on the dark and weary places that keep us bound. With enthusiasm and sensitivity, she helped me to question my thinking and patterns and find a new relationship with my body. When I entered the program, I had amassed twenty-five years of pain and struggle with my body and was holding on to a feeble hope of accepting my body. Five months later I do love and accept my body as it is. Pure magic! I strongly recommend this program to anyone, but especially to all of us beautiful women with so much vital energy who are wasting it on the treadmill of body hate. Be free!"
