  personal note from darshana

AH! After a long stretch of work and teaching plus the fires and settling into my new home I am taking a few days of R&R. I will either go to Harbin Hot springs this week or create a home spa vacation. (it all depends on which way the winds blow the N. California fires). Definitely in need of some restful, peaceful, relaxing and restorative time. This is real health care!

And that’s the topic of this week’s article: How are you investing in your health?

Earlier this week I was cooking up a storm. Every burner was going and I had a few things on the blending line up. As I enjoyed myself in the kitchen it dawned on me…. “Are people REALLY going to do this for themselves?

I’m a health counselor, this is my life so of course I’m spending my time cooking, preparing food, exercising and taking care of myself. It’s what I coach clients on every day, I have to walk my talk. But what about everyone else—will they really put this much effort into the care of their health?

What is real health insurance? Is going to the DR and getting drugs really healthy? Are the pharmaceutical companies helping us find the root cause of our illnesses? Is our monthly premium bill for our insurance company giving us a guarantee of optimal health?

Recently a friend of mine was telling me a story about how her sister is on anti anxiety medicine. She had mentioned at one time she chose to go on it herself and it made her feel completely depressed, lethargic and low. She wasn’t experiencing this before taking the medication. Interestingly enough her sister is also on anti depressants. Is one pill causing the need for the other?

Then the other day I got a pile of medical bills from some tests I had done earlier on in my pregnancy. Of course I didn’t understand them- so I had to call the insurance company to explain. TWO HOURS I was on the phone with them. First I was on hold, then transferred to three different departments and still when I got the “correct person” on the phone I was left with incomplete information.
Gosh there were so many other ways I could have done with those two hours.

Now don’t get me wrong I have been hospitalized before and had to be on meds for certain conditions and am completely grateful for having health insurance and for the resource. I’m not knocking it, but what are we paying for? Where’s our money going? Are we investing our money and time in places where it will really make a direct impact on our health and well being?

In my practice I hear things like, “Organic food costs too much,” (Although that’s changing now because if you eat local it actually costs less these days.)

I also hear, “I don’t have time to cook” and “I’m not sure how to be healthy?”

Do we really not have the time or money? If that’s so then where is the time and money going? To what cause? To what investment in our health? Do you feel insured that your health insurance company will come through and has your best health in mind? Is the quality of your food and lifestyle in alignment with your long term goals of health? Is the education and support the missing piece in your health care plan?

I think these are important questions to ask ourselves.

As I reflect on them I know I become more inspired to get out and exercise, eat healthy food and have less stress in my life. It’s a priority because really I'm the only one who cares and can make the difference, so what AM I GOING TO DO?

Standing there in my messy kitchen cooking I got excited. I thought,” YEAH this is what I am paying for !” I smiled when I realized I would have to spend the next ½ hour of my time doing dishes. The pay off was the delicious food I had made. And because I made it I saved money. (one thing I made was homemade sauerkraut which cost me about $2 to make a huge container. In the store it costs me $11.75- that’s a $9.75 saving!)

My nose went to the hot piping homemade cornbread coming out of my oven. So what if I miss out on my favorite muffin at the bakery, this cornbread was made from organic grains and is sweetened with agave nectar instead of “real sugar” which will impact my blood sugar, moods and more. I’m going to put my money AND my time into my health.

When we eat well we are INVESTING in our health. When we buy high quality food and cook it ourselves we are taking a deeper stand for our own health
and then when we eat it, well that’s the payoff.

Much different than the automatic debit that goes towards our insurance company.

So here are my questions for you:
How are you investing in your health?
What action step, even if it’s a little one, can you take today to do something for YOUR health?
What are the ways you want to see it pay off?

Think about it, write it down AND ACT ON IT.
Be mindful about where you put your money, time and energy because in the end it pays to be healthy!

If you need inspiration about how to do it give me a buzz. I’d be happy to outline a health plan that works for you now and moving towards your future.
